Through the work of its standing and temporary committees, the European Parliament develops and promotes measures that have a real impact on the daily lives of Europeans and businesses. Its activities contribute to the functioning of the EU’s internal market, where people, goods, services and capital can move freely.
By adopting decisions, making proposals and holding debates, today Parliament plays a key role in a wide range of areas, including consumer protection and passenger rights in all modes of transport, health promotion and disease prevention, and access to medicines and medical devices.
It takes action not only to increase food security, improve working conditions and social rights, combat youth unemployment and long-term unemployment, but also to promote gender equality, reduce poverty, combat discrimination against minorities, fight racism and xenophobia and improve the living conditions of socially disadvantaged people.
In addition, Parliament plays a part in strengthening the European Union’s industrial policy, further developing digital tools and enhancing their accessibility, ensuring cybersecurity, and supporting the mutual recognition of professional qualifications and the development of research and innovation. Some of its goals are to reduce energy consumption and waste, promote the use of renewable energy sources and meet ambitious climate and environmental targets.
It also promotes cultural diversity, supports the establishment of a common asylum system in Europe, and helps to reduce illegal immigration, protect vulnerable groups and improve citizens’ access to justice and judicial cooperation in civil matters, as well as contributing to the fight against crime, corruption and terrorism in the European Union.
