The European Parliament is 70 years old. Over the years, it has undergone profound changes. Since 1952, Parliament has gone from strength to strength to become a powerful and independent institution, which today plays a key political role in the European Union. It is the only EU institution whose powers have steadily expanded for over thirty years.
Since 1979, its members have been elected by direct universal suffrage, and it now represents the interests of all European citizens. Its 705 members, elected every five years, are the voice of nearly 450 million people.
Parliament is the largest forum for discussions where European political realities come face to face in the service of democracy. With its unique multilingualism, it clearly reflects Europe’s diversity. It also promotes freedom of expression and human rights in Europe and around the world.
Parliament works to actively strengthen a Europe founded on the rule of law, values, equality and equity. It is an example of European democracy in action. With its official seat in Strasbourg, Parliament has helped to establish this city in Alsace as the parliamentary capital of a united Europe.
