Après avoir vaincu les assassins de César à Philippes, Antoine voulut rencontrer Cléopâtre pour une alliance. Antoine et Cléopâtre devinrent amants mais la célèbre relation se termina tragiquement avec la mort des protagonistes après la défaite d'Actium. L'histoire d'amour entre le général romain et le dernier pharaon d'Égypte a inspiré les œuvres de nombreux artistes. William Shakespeare a écrit la tragédie historique en 5 actes qui a été jouée pour la première fois en 1607 ou 1608.
