Dopo aver sconfitto gli assassini di Cesare a Filippi, Antonio volle incontrare Cleopatra per un’alleanza. Ne nacque la celebre relazione che terminò tragicamente con la morte dei protagonisti dopo la sconfitta ad Azio. Gli amori tra il condottiero romano e l'ultimo faraone d'Egitto ispirarono le opere di numerosi artisti. William Shakespeare scrisse la tragedia storica in 5 atti che andò in scena per la prima volta nel 1607 o nel 1608 e che venne stampata molte volte a partire dal 1623.
