Sieviešu lasītprasme viduslaikos bija pārsteidzoši augsta. Mūķenes bija autores un rakstu mācītāji. Daudzas citas sievietes mudināja lasīt un mācīties, īpaši dižciltīgas sievietes. Viens piemērs bija Kristīne de Pizāna, dzejniece Francijas karaļa Kārļa VI galmā.
